We leave tomorrow for San Fran so Justin can race the Escape from Alcatraz on Sunday.
Here is why I married a psycho and it sometimes scares me… kidding. From the race’s website:
SWIM
The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon begins with a 7:30 am plunge from the San Francisco Belle into the icy cold water adjacent to Alcatraz Island. Participants are unloaded from the boat in less than 6 minutes. It is quite a rush when you take the leap from the ferry for the 1.5 mile swim. Triathletes will face strong currents and 55 degree water temperatures. Wetsuits and hoods are recommended.
Hoods?!
BIKE
Mounting their bikes at the Marina Green, triathletes will begin the out-and-back 18-mile ride by heading west toward Crissy Field via Marina Boulevard. They will climb to Lincoln Blvd. traveling through the Presidio to Camino del Mar. They will then climb up the hill to the Palace of the Legion of Honor…
Any flat roads here?!
RUN
On tired legs, the triathletes will begin the 8-mile run… They will encounter the deep sand of Baker Beach to the turn-around point and back until they reach the dreaded Equinox Sand Ladder (400 steps up the cliff). This experience will drain the legs of even the best professionals. Runners are urged to use the hand cable to help them walk up the stairs. The stairs are to the run what the currents and waves are to the swim.
Tired legs, deep sand, dreaded, drain the legs, urged to use hand cables?!
Should be an interesting Sunday.
Stay tuned to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to stay posted on him!
In other news, this is my last week in 2nd trimester. Since I have a scheduled C-Section at 39 weeks, I guess I’m really already in my 3rd since I only have 12 weeks left. YIKES!
I finally feel pregnant.
As I mentioned before, FitBump has offered me the opportunity for a free month of DailyBurn workout videos. They suggested the Beautiful Belly workouts for us preggo mamas,
but of course I chose HR Inferno.
Have a great time in San Francisco and best of luck to Justin in the race! Karen @karenlovestorun
Thanks Karen!
Umm, that race seems ridiculously hard!! What an accomplished feeling Justin will have when that is done! Have an awesome time in SF:) It would be kind of nice to know exactly when the baby is coming instead of taking it day by day:) So exciting!!
Yes, Justin is 104% crazy!
So eeexxxcciiiittting! Please post your bump pictures as you go. I get excited seeing other people go through the process. You guys live your running life through my accomplishments sometimes, and now I want to live through you as all I do is run haha! That race looks terrifying, but I can already feel my competitiveness is bothered that i just said that. Must leave your page now….or I may end up signing up 😛
we’ve done that race.. well i should say i ran it, but the kiwi has done it twice. OH MY those stairs!!! you are so amazing!
How do you handle watching your husband run that race?!? I’d be a nervous wreck! Like you, I’d opt for the high-intensity workout, too. I just rolled into 28 weeks, and I’m struggling with the idea of taking my exercise down a few notches. Overall, I’m continuing to listen to my body, but there’s days it says to slow down when my mind wants to go, go, go.
Good luck to Justin! My gf who is racing this year LOVES this race- I think it looks/sounds crazy! Can’t wait to see your photos! Safe travels.
Exciting you’re in your third trimester! Sorry your back hurts so much. At least you can walk up the SF hills hunched over and nobody will think anything of it!
I’d love to do some crazy races, but not one where I have to jump off a ferry into freezing water with crazy currents and sharks in it!
I definitely forwent gentle preggo exercise for my regular boot camp workouts. Except the last month I was a total loser and did nothing! It was too hot and I was too fat..
Looks like a fun weekend! 34 weeks is when I hit a wall with my last pregnancy. She dropped so just walking was not fun and I was so tired. I am already feeling more tired but between my full time job, golf, workouts, a 3-yr old and now we are starting to build our dream house I think I would be tired regardless. 11 weeks to go for us.
I hear you- that’s about when I started feeling more pregnant too, and this past week I took a nap every day on our trip! It was heavenly. I definitely see the connection between more intense workouts and a decrease in energy all day… it’s hard to slow down, but I know I have to. Just 2-3 months left is nothing!
By the way, enjoy San Fran!! That’s where we went on our babymoon before L was born- I loved it! And your husband is crazy, in the best possible way. 🙂
That stair picture made me laugh, it’ll be a good race that is for sure! Last time around, I think I felt pregnant around 35ish weeks. This one I am sure it will happen sooner as I’m already as big as I was last time at the end so nothing like lugging that much extra weight for like 16+ more weeks (I went late last time so I’m expecting to do the same this time around)
That race sounds absolutely insane!!!!!…cool, but crazy! Your husband is very adventurous!!!
I do not think I could jump like that and I am not even pregnant!!!!
How have I not been following you on Instagram??? Now worries, I just took care of that and followed.
I would NEVER do the race that Justin is doing. NEVER. Just thinking about “strong currents” frightens me!
